Alex arrived home just before sunset. Lauren’s car wasn’t in the garage. He called her numerous times and sent text messages. He drove straight to Drake Properties. He worried about her staff meeting.

Had something happened to her?

Fear gripped Alex as he sped along the backstreets searching for Lauren’s car at nearby shops, and she was nowhere in sight. “Lauren.” He sighed.

Drake Properties parking lot was empty, so Alex kept driving the streets. He reached for his phone to call Logan, his guts twisting inside afraid someone may have hurt Lauren too.

Alex had almost given up when he passed The Dirty Rat and saw her vehicle. He pulled into the lot, turned off the engine, and sprinted through the front door. He stood speechless watching her dance in front of a half a dozen drunks. A whoosh of fury raged at the thoughts running through their inebriated brains.

Lauren’s eyes were shut tight as she danced seductively. As the song neared the end, he saw tears trailing down her cheeks. Oh, Lauren, you’re breaking my heart.

She stopped dancing and stood still for a long second, then opened her half-lidded eyes. She wet her lips, and said, “Take me home, Alex.”

The men roared and clapped, and he glared at them. “Shut the hell up.” He turned to her and asked. “Where’s your purse?”

“In my car. I’ve been drinking. Can’t drive.”

She draped her arm around his waist and leaned against his chest. Lauren was crying.

He went to the bartender. “Cash her out.”

“Done. Here’s her card.” Dillard handed him Lauren’s credit card.

A leather-clad man chuckled at the bar. “Hey, dude, need any help?”

“Leave them alone, T-bone,” said Dillard.

Alex glared at T-bone and shouted, “Back off.” He helped Lauren out of the bar and into his SUV.

“Woman, do you have any idea what you’ve put me through this afternoon? I’ve been looking for you for hours.”

Her head fell back. “I’m mad. Alex, don’t let Bratten take over, okay?”

“What happened, Lauren?”

“Bratten’s a liar and a cheat. I have proof.”

He buckled her up, then himself, before pulling onto the street for home. “I don’t believe it. Whatever it is, there’s an explanation.”

“Still taking up for him?” She leaned her head on the passenger door window and sighed. “Alex, why did you come looking for me?”

His voice quivered. “Because I thought you were hurt. I thought they’d gotten to you too. Lauren, don’t do that to me again.” He trembled from head to toe with anger and frustration, fear and hatred to those in the bar responsible for the devastation wreaked on his friend. Proof? He didn’t have any. “Those men that watched you dance more than likely know what happened to Bratten, to Angeline and your home. What in God’s name were you thinking?”

Reaching over the console, Lauren took his hand, bringing his fingertips to her lips. His heart melted with the emotion conveyed in her glimmering amber-colored eyes visible in the dimly lit vehicle.

“I’m sorry.” She pressed kisses on the back of his hand. “I didn’t mean to upset or frighten you.
